Contemplative Corner – “Servant of Others”

Servant of Others

You lovingly washed your disciples’ feet,
Dirty, smelly as they must have been.
And I, who want to be of service
So quickly turn away from the difficult,
Try to ease my way out of anything
That takes too much of my precious time
Or asks more than I am wanting to give.
When will I come to accept the reality
That following your example of service
Requires more than seeking my own comfort?

“So if I, your Lord and teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another’s feet. For I have set you an example, that you should also do as I have done for you” (John 13:14-15).
