Mission at Heartland

“Bear one another’s burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ.” -Galatians 6:2

At Heartland, we give both locally and internationally with love and generosity. While giving to any organization fulfills the law of Christ, we tend to focus our giving on the following missions.

LOCAL MISSION

CROSS Outreach
Based in Des Moines; focus homelessness prevention

Heartland supports CROSS Outreach through regular giving from our budget as well as specific fundraisers throughout the year such as our Back to School Backpack giveaway and monthly collection of personal hygiene items.

Waukee Area Christian Services
Based in Waukee; focus on food and basic health care assistance

Every Christmastime, Heartland adopts 30-40 children through WACS and provides them with holiday gifts.

Central Iowa Shelter and Services
Largest homeless shelter in Iowa

Three times every year, a group from Heartland organizes food donations as well as volunteers to serve a meal at the homeless shelter downtown Des Moines.

Des Moines Area Religious Council
Based in Des Moines; assists with basic human needs and provides a context for interfaith dialogue

DMARC is supported by Heartland through our annual budget and by special collection opportunities throughout the year.

DOMESTIC MISSION

Presbyterian Mission

As a member of the greater Presbyterian church organization (PCUSA), Heartland is able to support many different charitable organizations through special offerings over the course of the church calendar year.  To learn more about PCUSA mission work, visit https://www.presbyterianmission.org/.

INTERNATIONAL MISSION

Our Sister Parish

Heartland is proud to have a covenant relationship with a canton (small village) in Tablon Cerna, El Salvador through the organization known as Our Sister Parish.  A partnership and friendship has been established between our community and the residents of Tablon Cerna.  We support this covenant through prayer, friendship and financial assistance. Heartland strives to send a delegation to visit Tablon Cerna every 18 months to foster and grow our relationships.  Many fundraisers and benefits are organized to support this mission.  Those who are lucky enough to travel to El Salvador on a delegation trip will attest to life-changing experiences and a feeling of love that knows no cultural or political boundaries. Visit our blog to read about Heartland’s last delegation experiences in June 2109.

The Heartland congregation is always willing to rise to the request for help.  We consider giving to be an important part of our ministry.  Heartland members have a strong passion for giving back and are always finding ways to organize opportunities for everyone to be involved. No matter your talents or ability to give financially, there is a chance for you to serve the Lord in our congregation.

Want to learn more about mission opportunities?  Watch for gatherings of our Dynamic Discussions group!  This group is composed of passionate individuals that want to learn about the current issues in our community, nation, and world.  These discussions provide facts as well as opportunities to help or get involved. This group meets sporadically as hot topic issues hit our radar.  Check the church calendar or our weekly newsletter for upcoming dates.
